General Colin Powell, one of the most respected and accomplished military and political leaders of his generation, has passed away. Powell, who served as the first black U.S. Secretary of State under President George W. Bush, was known for his integrity, intelligence, and leadership, as well as his trailblazing achievements as a black man in the military and politics.
Born in Harlem, New York in 1937, Powell grew up in the South Bronx and attended the City College of New York before joining the Army as a second lieutenant in 1958. He went on to serve in the Vietnam War, rising through the ranks to become a four-star general and one of the most highly regarded military leaders of his time.
After retiring from the Army, Powell embarked on a successful career in politics and public service. He served as National Security Advisor under President Ronald Reagan and as Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff under President George H.W. Bush, becoming the first black person to hold that position. In 2001, he was appointed Secretary of State by President George W. Bush, where he played a key role in the U.S. response to the 9/11 attacks and the subsequent wars in Afghanistan and Iraq.
Throughout his career, Powell was known for his integrity, intelligence, and commitment to public service. He was widely respected by both Democrats and Republicans for his leadership and his dedication to the values of democracy and freedom. He was also a champion of diversity and inclusion, breaking down barriers for black people and other minority groups in the military and politics.
Powell’s passing is a profound loss for the United States and for people around the world who admired his leadership and his legacy of service. He will be remembered as a true American hero, whose contributions to his country and to the world will be felt for generations to come.
Powell is survived by his wife, Alma, and his three children. He will be deeply missed by his family, friends, and colleagues, as well as by the millions of people whose lives he touched through his leadership and his example.
